Images of New Orleans

Before I go into all of my indulgent New Orleans photos, I wanted to start off by reminding you that life for many residents is divided into two time frames:  Pre-Katrina and Post-Katrina. In many ways, the people who came back to the city really wanted to be there and invested time, money, life, and love back into the city. They have a lot at stake, but Mother Nature always has other ideas.  What we see on the news is never the reality.  So, it's good to take a pause and think of the people who live in the flood plains or are picking up the pieces after the tornados in the Southeast, remember when you think you are having a bad day.....you probably are not.

Holocaust Memorial by the river......

A French Quarter delight for buttery, flaky croissants.....(Croissant d'or)

Ham and cheese croissant the size of my head.....

I wolfed it down in the cute courtyard behind the bakery....

What a treat to watch a traditional New Orleans wedding with the bride, groom, and all of the attendees dancing in the streets.....

A little respite by the rooftop pool at the Renaissance Arts Hotel in the Warehouse District....

My new Jessica Simpson shoes!

My hotel actually had a sculpture garden on the 2nd floor and an art gallery on the main level.  I loved this piece.

This photo made me laugh.  My glasses are crooked, I was cranky and hungry, and the street car was running way behind....

The Garden District.

A crawfish extravaganza!

Desserts from Sucré.....

You might recognize this house, it's from MTV's The Real World: New Orleans.   The new owners do not have the house number posted on the property and they have painted it beige to disguise it a bit from its well-known white exterior.

I love my new maxi dress, but flip flops in the French Quarter leads to very dirty feet.

One of my favorite streets in the Quarter.  I nabbed a similar photo during my March trip.

Dancing on the Red Carpet

For all of the fans of So You Think You Can Dance and America's Best Dance Crew, this video is for you.  I had the opportunity along with Dance Channel TV to cover collidEdance's blink/drEam last week at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood.  It was a hot night on the red carpet with many alumni from the FOX and MTV dance shows.  Some dancers were there to dance while others were there to support choreographer, Erica Michelle Sobol, in her whimsical and lively evening of dance.  Erica was a pleasure to interview because she was easy to interview.  Why does that make a difference?  Some dancers are not media savvy, their art is created and performed with their bodies, not their voices.  So sometimes, red carpet interviews are awkward.  However, Erica gave great sound bites, she was friendly, and she has a great on-camera presence.  Another superstar on the red carpet was Lauren Gottlieb from SYTYCD.  Her mentor is Tyce Diorio and it shows.  She navigated her way through the press line like the star that she is.  Tyce is a genius at this too (See the documentary Every Little Step to see what I mean.) and he is passing this great quality on to Lauren.  Another great dance mentorship hard at work-genius!
To see the real stars on the red carpet, head over to WireImage for photos of the evening.
This was one of my most unusual nights on the red carpet.  I poked choreographer, Sohey Sugihara, in the eye to show that the frames to his glasses were just that frames, no glasses (Stay until the end of the piece, you will see what I mean.), I stumped many dancers with the easy question, "Who is the one major dance influence in your life/career?", and I made Janet Jackson's choreographer, Gil Duldulao, cry.  Yes, I said cry.  He is such a sweet man and I wish more of his interview made the final edit.  Here's the scoop:  I asked him how his working relationship with Janet has changed since Michael was such a huge influence on her work.  Well, Gil is a very close friend of the family and the emotions of the loss of the pop icon are still raw.  His eyes welled up with tears and he explained that his influence is so great, it is almost like Michael is still here.  It was such an emotional moment on the red carpet.  One I have never experienced before and one that I will never forget.  I sent Gil off with a big hug after our interview.

We were also able to capture some of the rehearsal footage with the dancers and grab what happens behind the scenes on the night before a big performance. And I know, I know, it's "bad rehearsal, good show.", I think I screwed that phrase up in the piece.  So, sit back, relax, and enjoy all of the hot action from the red carpet:

Material Girl Hits LA

I grew up as a part of the MTV generation back when kids ran home to watch "Thriller" and I thought MTV VJ, Adam Curry's, feathered hair was really cool.  Yet even with all the glitz and the over the top glam of the '80's, no one could ever top the style of Madonna.  She became an icon with her fingerless gloves, holey fishnet tights, and puffy crinolines as skirts.  While her style has evolved beyond that decade, she has never departed from her icon status.  This time around, she's the designer of all the fashions and she brings her daughter, Lola, along for the ride.  Sold exclusively at Macy's is the new Material Girl line, and Los Angeles is getting a first glimpse on Tuesday, August 3rd.  Here are the details:

Where:  Macy's Glendale Galleria

When:  Tuesday, August 3rd at 10AM

The Fun:  *The first 200 customers will receive a FREE Material Girl bandeau top.

*A KIIS-FM DJ will be holding 3 contests:  a trivia quiz, look-a-like contest, and a
                  dance-off.

*Prizes for the contests include Madonna autographed items.

*Dress in your favorite Madonna inspired look (I wonder if I could dig out those
                   fingerless gloves from storage?)

I was also able to grab a sneak peek at a few photos from the line and I'm thrilled I can share them with you.  The Material Girl line offers everything from handbags to jewelry to apparel and footwear with reasonable price points from $12-$40. (Let's hear it for Madonna for keeping the prices real.) The Fall 2010 collection is all about prints and embellishments to offer some depth and texture to your fall wardrobe. And true to Madonna and Lola's style, notice the combination of hard and soft elements.  They will pair a tutu skirt (Hello, 1980's crinoline!) with combat boots or an oversized boyfriend sweatshirt with a floral print mini skirt.

Xbox 360 Kinect

Here's a quick round-up of photos from the Xbox 360 Kinect Launch at the Galen Center tonight at the start of E3 week.  I was kindly invited by Stephanie Piche of Mingle Media TV and I jumped at the chance to check out Cirque du Soleil present the new Microsoft system with flair in a way that only Cirque can.  The presentation did not disappoint:  walking on the ceiling, flying, dancing, and a light show the audience participated in with magical capes.  The idea of a gaming system without an actual controller is cool, but I wasn't super impressed with the games they showed us.  And I am talking about it from a casual gamer point of view.  I've got a Wii and an PS3 in the house, and I felt like Kinect gave me a rehash of the games I already own except for the awesome light saber game for Star Wars. (It also received the largest reaction from the audience.) Regardless, the evening was fun, enjoy the photos below, and Happy E3!

In line, while one of the Cirque drummers keeping us occupied while we wait.........
And wait........
Yep, me still waiting..........look, they finally let me in and I encounter a very tall man.....
We are given our magical capes to wear (Matt Crabtree and JD Piche)

Okay, they are really choir robes:
There was a family suspended from the ceiling and hanging out on a couch.  I wanted that job.....
Your typical Cirque shenanigans during the pre-show:
And my own shenanigans.....drinking virtual water:

We didn't have seats, until I asked the nicest usher ever.  He found us four seats.  This was our cool view.
Very Simba/Circle of Life/Lion King with the life-sized elephant:
And the reason we wore our capes...we were part of the light show!  Green......
Pink............
......and purple.

Be sure to catch the entire show on MTV on Tuesday, June 15th at 3:30 PM ET/12:30 PT.
