The Friday Five

The weekend has arrived and I am a little late in posting, but I have about two hours left in the day. Let's get started with this week's Friday Five, my favorite things of the week:

1. Paris: I booked a job in Paris and I leave in 12 days! (I'll have more information on the job once I find out the company's social media policy.) I picked up my guidebook today and I'm getting ready to plan my leisure time in the city.  If you have any suggestions outside of the usual tourist fare, let me know in the comments below. I love places that are off of the beaten track.

2. Powell's:  I'm back in Portland again this summer and I have to tell you it warms my heart to see a city support a book store.  While I picked up my Paris guidebook at the legendary Powell's Book, I noticed the rooms buzzing with people reading, browsing, and shopping.  It's a good thing for the local economy and it's a good thing for BOOKS!

3. Broadway Beat:  On Tuesdays, I will be covering the Broadway Beat on Dance Channel TV.  This week might be one of my favorite postings, Newsies is coming to the stage!  Please tell me I am not the only one who loves the film, Newsies?  Click here to read the article.

Dis

4. Recycling:  I know this isn't a sexy topic, but I love how Portland separates their recycling bins.  These are the public bins and they have done a great job training the citizens on how to separate their trash. How did they do it? They started with the kids by putting them in the schools first and then slowly releasing them to other public buildings.  Smart, right?

5. Quote: I was shopping after work today (Big shock there, right?) when I noticed a great quote on the side of Pioneer Place in downtown Portland.  I think it is a great quote to start the weekend with and a great reminder to all of us......even if it did come from a mall.

Have a great weekend.  I will see you back in LA on Monday!

The Black Swan Controversy

Earlier this weekend, I decided to stir up some conversation on my personal Facebook page (not my public page) and ask my dance friends what they thought about the Sarah Lane/dance double controversy surrounding the movie, Black Swan.  Little did I know, I unleashed the beast.  I received comments like the hilarious, "It's bloody Flashdance all over again!" to the downright unkind, "I'm sorry but no one cares about the doubles NO ONE!!" [sic].  The latter comment actually got me fired up because I DO care about dance doubles and Sarah's predicament.  I used to be a professional dancer and I know all about the hard work, dedication, and suffering on a physical and emotional level for very little pay. So, may I present my final thoughts on the subject:

                                                  My Starpulse Article....

One note, it is no secret that Natalie Portman is not my favorite celebrity, but I want to say that she has been very gracious towards Sarah and her dancing throughout the entire awards season process. So, let's not bash Portman because I don't think this is the underlying issue at hand.  Fire away, kids!

Behind the Scenes of Choreographers in Media

As many of you know, I cover a lot of events, red carpets, panels, and conferences for my job, some events are more exciting than others.  When I come upon the annual "Choreographers in Media" panel each year, I get giddy.  As a former dancer, it's a thrill to hear about the history of dance and where the art form is headed.  That is what the panel, sponsored by Dance Camera West, offers each year.  Last year, the panel offered a powerhouse of top choreographers like Maguerite Derricks, Chucky Klapow, and Tyce Diorio.  It was a bittersweet event because Chucky kept us all glued to our seats with updates on Michael Jackson's "This is It" tour which he was rehearsing with Kenny Ortega down at the Staples Center.  Less than a week later, Michael had passed away.  His contribution to dance and choreography is not forgotten as Michael was a huge topic of conversation at this year's panel including Lula Washington, Kim Blank, Chuck Maldonado, and Larry Billman as moderator.
I had the opportunity to interview all four of them individually for Dance Channel TV and they each brought something exciting to the panel.  Lula is a firecracker!  I am thrilled to see that modern dance is getting its due in mainstream entertainment and it doesn't get any bigger than James Cameron's Avatar.  The challenges presented to Lula were often on the technological side, but she created four wonderful ballets for the movie all while using motion capture.  While we didn't get to see those full ballets onscreen, I am hoping Mr. Cameron saves it for the extras on the DVD.
Chuck represented the male point of view on this panel.  As a choreographer, he is working on his 20th film in less than a decade.  That is truly an impressive number because he has only been in LA since 2001. His speciality is stepping and he gave DCTV a little highlight of his signature move.  If you want to see what he is truly capable of, rent Stomp the Yard.  It is a choreographic feat in terms of stepping sequences.  I also like that Chuck talked about the importance of a choreographer on set because a director is not trained to see movement the way a dancer is trained.  He talks about all of the possibilities for a choreographer on set during his interview.
And then there is Kim.  As a dancer working in the 1980's, she was there for the MTV explosion back when music videos were a pioneering art form.  Michael Jackson was king and musical artists created stories behind the music.  It was interesting to hear Kim say the Thriller video was considered "a great gig" at the time.  She was young, so she was in awe of the people she was working with MJ, choreographer, Michael Peters, and legendary dancer, Gary Chapman. She didn't realize she was going to be a part of pop culture history, the music video that sent me rushing home from school each afternoon.  It's hard for this generation of dancers to understand that we went into a frenzy anytime the video was played because MTV barely register on the pop culture radar anymore.

Larry proved to be a terrific moderator for this panel since his vast movie and television choreography knowledge validates the importance of dance in all artistic mediums.  He spent years at Disney Live Entertainment and he talked about the cultural significance of the Mouse in dance during the variety show years heyday.  The Kids of the Kingdom dancers performed with Anne Margaret, Bob Hope, in front of Presidents, and at the Super Bowl.  It was one of the best gigs in the industry at the time.  While the landscape has changed, he still believes that Michael Jackson has the most influence on choreography even in 2010.  If you are interested in learning more, Larry has a terrific book called Film Choreographers and Dance Directors. (link posted below

Two important notes also came out of this panel.  One involved the importance of mentoring.  We lost significant choreographers in the 80's from Michael Bennett to Michael Peters to Bob Fosse.  Those great losses also created the "lost" years in dance.  There were years without a driving force in dance and innovations in the industry.  Each of the choreographers on the panel talked about the importance of teaching and mentoring young dancers who are interested in working behind the scenes in TV and film.  As a choreographer in Hollywood, you need to be a producer, a director, and an artist all at once.  They don't want to lose the momentum that dance currently has, so they are working hard to raise the next generation in the industry.  Finally, the YouTube revolution has also changed the face of dance.  For an artist, you can't be one dimensional to succeed, you need to find your place in multimedia.  It can be a challenge, but technology is playing an important role in all art forms.

If you missed the panel, check out all of the highlights from Dance Channel TV:

2009 in Review: June

Okay, we are officially at the halfway point and this is where my year started charging full speed ahead and it doesn't slow down until we hit the Christmas holidays.

Hanging at E3 with the 2010 Toyota Prius and The Sims 3:

This still remains one of my favorite locations from The Web Files, The Hollywood Wax Museum. I adore the cast from The Crew and I am so happy for their success. Check out our episode with them here: The Crew

Covering the Whatever Works premiere at the Pacific Design Center for Focus Hollywood. I interviewed some fantastic actors at this premiere, Ed Begley, Jr, Patricia Clarkson, Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Peter Fonda, and John Lithgow. See the footage here:
Whatever Works Premiere

My coverage for this panel will stand out in my mind forever. I attended Dance Camera West's Choreography Media Honors Panel to cover the events for Dance Channel TV. One of the dancers, Chuck Klapow, was currently rehearsing the "This Is It" tour with Michael Jackson. Read the article: Choreography Panel. Sadly, we all know the outcome.

On set with The Web Files for Episode 4 featuring Space Hospital. They are currently airing Season 2, so be sure to check them out. This is also the first shoot we came across our current makeup artist, Melissa Anchondo. A fortuitous day! Here's episode 4: Space Hospital.
Things only get busier as the second half of the year brings a lot of growth to The Web Files. Remember, we didn't even launch until July 8th! Come back for more tomorrow.

Dance Channel TV: Can't Miss List, Episode 9

Here it is, our latest episode of the Can't Miss List featuring scoop on Footloose, Kenny Ortega, Julianne Hough, Kathy Griffin, Let's Dance, Winona Ryder, Darren Aronofsky, and Black Swan. Phew. The new Black Swan movie continues to garner a lot of interest and feedback from dance fans. Have you heard about it yet? Well, Darren Aronofsky never shies away from the controversial side of life, so it should be a fascinating tale set in the ballet world.

This shoot came after a long day of work on my other show, The Web Files, so my hair and makeup looks were all set and ready to go thanks to Melissa Anchondo, my incredible makeup artist. Fortunately, I was warmed up from a day of talking, so we did it in one take. Trust me, that's rare. I nailed it right off of the bat. Yay! I think Arsen Serobian, founder/CEO of Dance Channel TV, was so happy that he fed me cake after the shoot and I happily accepted. Really, who doesn't like cake? And a big shout out to Suzanne Jolie who writes all of the content for the show. I couldn't be snarky without her.

Hope you are enjoying the Can't Miss List. What do you want to see in our next episode?

Dance Channel TV Can't Miss List: Episode 8

This is it! No, really This Is It! Yes, the movie has opened to big box office and of course, we spoof MJ a bit in Episode 8. I cannot wait to see the movie, but it looks like I have a little more time since SONY extended the run through Thanksgiving. (Like we didn't see that coming even before it opened.)

So, if you like what you see below, head on over to Dance Channel TV for more fantastic dance videos!

The Week in Review

To say this week was busy was an understatement. On Sunday, I was in Atlanta with LG Electronics doing presentations on their new LED/LCD screens for CEDIA. This is the second time I have worked for them this year and they truly are an amazing company. Keep your eye on them, they are a force to be reckoned with in the electronics industry.
Monday it was back to LA for an interview for The Web Files with the creators of Showbizzle, Charles and Lindsey Rosin. If you think the name Charles Rosin sounds familiar, you are correct. He was the Executive Producer and Show Runner for the original 90210 during the Brenda years. As a 90210 fan, it really was a treat for me!

Tuesday had me off to Vegas for a super secret event with a major corporation. No photos were allowed to be taken, but it was a fun night at The Venetian and I loved my beautiful suite with the sunken living room and 3 LCD screens.
Wednesday, I was back in LA and on the set with The Web Files crew for a Dirty Bomb Diaries shoot. The location that EP, Sandra Payne, found was genius: Emergency Disaster Systems in the City of Industry for a web series about a dirty bomb going off in the city of Los Angeles. We had a lot of fun with the hard hats, masks, and first aid kits, so you should expect to see me all geared out in the episode.
By the time we hit Thursday, I was running on fumes, but I rallied because our final interview of the week was with the man behind the tinted glasses, Tim Street. We shared a drink and had a chat about the web industry 10 years ago and today. I think this episode will be very beneficial to the web series creators out there, so stay tuned!

After The Web Files shoot, I ran over to the Dance Channel TV studios to film the biweekly "Can't Miss List". This week brought a Patrick Swayze tribute, the typical DWTS PR stunt of the week, Fame, and the rumor that the GAP dance ads are back! Check out Episode 7 below:

Okay, that's the week in review! Next week brings another Web Files interview with the cast of the upcoming web series, Compulsions, and a job in The Lone Star State. Yee Haw!

Dance Channel TV "Can't Miss List": Episode 6

The "Can't Miss List' continues to be one of my favorite pieces to shoot. I am finding that our fantastic writer, Suzanne Jolie, is writing it with more and more snark each episode. Who wouldn't love that? With dance really hitting its stride in mainstream media with shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars, it is ripe for ribbing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Feel free to comment on what you are looking for on our next "Can't Miss List"!

PS You have to love my crazy eyes in image above. Thanks, Blip.tv, you know how to make a girl look good. ;)

Dance Channel TV: Gotta Dance!

Everyone always wants to see the behind the scenes photos of the sets I work on, so I think this one has to be my favorite. I was able to bring my puppy, Indy, to set with me while I shot the opening to my piece on the new documentary, Gotta Dance! She doesn't like to leave my side, so we let her sit at my feet because the shot was from the waist up. So, working in my industry does have its benefits from time to time......take your puppy to work day!

If you haven't had an opportunity to see Gotta Dance!, well, it's time to put it on your list. The documentary by Dori Berinstein follows the inaugural season of the NETsationals, the senior hip-hop dance team for the NJ Nets. I think you will find this movie incredibly inspiring. It truly proves that dance is for everyone! I had the opportunity to interview Dori and several of the dancers including my favorites, Betty and Claire. I sat next to Betty's husband at the premiere in LA and they have to be the nicest couple ever. He really enjoyed his wife's superstardom! I also tried to convince him to take his wife on a date to the Hollywood Bowl while they were in town, I wonder if they ever made it?

For those musical theatre geeks, like me, be sure to check out director Dori Berinstein's other documentary, Show Business: The Road to Broadway. It follows four Broadway shows from the inception of 2003-2004 season all the way to the surprising outcome at the Tony's. Happily, I even caught a glimpse of one of my favorite friends, Denny Downs, in the documentary as he accompanied Kristin Chenoweth to the Tony's that year.

Finally, see my Dance Channel TV report here: Gotta Dance!
By the way, Indy thought I did a good job, she gave me a high five when I was done.

Dance Channel TV

Besides The Web Files, I also host a biweekly show called, the "Can't Miss List", which highlights the latest scoop in dance news. I love hosting the show because we provide a one-stop location to hear what is happening on all of your favorite dance shows, Broadway, and even concert dance. This week's episode features all of the Paula Abdul news you can possibly imagine plus, some interesting comments about Shakira's choreography in her new video. Let me know what you think......good? Bad? I am not a fan of HiHat's work in this video, but I am open to discussion on this.

If you haven't heard the scoop on "Dancing With the Stars", well, they are going to have 16 contestants in the next season. The season will not be longer, just more brutal for the celebrities participating. They will have to endure 3 back-to-back double eliminations, so they will lose a good percentage of the cast in 3 episodes. Do you think this is a good way to shake things up?

Finally, we will be doing a lot of coverage on this movie, "Gotta Dance"! The new movie documents the auditions to the season finale performance of the NETsationals, the senior hip-hop dance team for the NJ Nets. You haven't seen anything like this before. It's a fantastic reminder that dance is for EVERYONE. The movie is already open in NYC and it opens July 21st here in LA.

Special Edition: Dance Camera West's Choreography Media Honors Panel

**Update: June 25, 2009**

This article was written on Monday, June 22, 2009. Michael Jackson suddenly passed away from cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009. He was a part of many dancers' childhood dreams of performing on the stage. May his music live on and may his soul continue to dance.

R.I.P., Michael

On Friday night, I had the opportunity to attend Dance Camera West's Choreography Media Honors. What a treat for choreographers, dancers, and dance aficionados! The panel consisted of the top creative teams from "So You Think You Can Dance", "The 81st Annual Academy Awards", and "High School Musical". The night was moderated by Daniel Ezralow, choreographer for the upcoming Broadway show, "Spiderman".

Highlights from each of the shows/choreographers:

SYTYCD: The spotlight was really on this show during the panel. Matthew Diamond, director, Tabitha and Napoleon, choreographers, and Tyce Diorio, choreographer. It was fascinating to hear that choreographers only get 4 and 1/2 hours of rehearsal time with the dancers before the show. Tabitha mentioned that they are literally calling out reminders and instructions as they are walking out of the studio. SYTYCD is a game show, so it is regulated by the FCC and all contestants must have the same amount of rehearsal time to make it fair to everyone. A few audience members wanted to know why the dancers didn't have the same type of launching pad as the "American Idol" contestants. It does seem that the SYTYCD winners seem to fade into obscurity while America still knows the names of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jordin Sparks. Napoleon felt that the dancers do the show because they love to dance, they don't care about being a star. Tyce mentioned that the show is only a springboard or a beginning then the reality of the dance world sets in. I think it has to do with the bottom line......$$$$. The producers make a ton of money off of these kids, put them on tour, and then throw them to the wolves when they are done. No preparation for what is about to happen or not happen to them. The producers don't look back because they have another season around the corner. Harsh, no? I even had a chat with a true insider, but I promised that our entire conversation would be off the record. And so it remains, off the record, but wow......it makes you think twice about reality/competition shows.

The 81st Academy Awards: This panel was fascinating since it consisted of Marguerite Derricks, choreographer of Hugh Jackman's opening number at the Oscars and John Palermo, producer and partner to Jackman's Seed Productions. This was probably the most interesting to me due to my work at the Kodak and the years I have worked the Meet the Oscars exhibit. I love this show and it fascinates me to see how all of this work comes together for one night only. Maguerite expects a lot from her dancers by not tailoring her movement to them. She expects them to be able to do her movement from the first audition. While John works in a producing capacity, he really has an eye for what works in terms of choreographing for the camera. Movement created for the stage is one element, but movement for the TV cameras adds an entire new dimension. Maguerite has a lot on her plate with the new Broadway show, "Wonderland", and the remake of "Fame" coming out in September. (Look for a 2 1/2 minute pas de deux in the Graduation scene of the movie. Woo hoo!) And, dancers, if you are looking to work with Maguerite, she is now finding Los Angeles dancers more versatile than New York dancers whom she thinks sometimes get stuck in a rut with one style after performing in long running shows.

High School Musical: Representing the HSM trilogy were Charles "Chucky" Klapow, Co-Choreographer, Mark Hofeling, Production Designer, Barry Rosenbush, Executive Producer. Well, I feel like the tide has finally turned on the HSM trilogy. The heat of this series has peaked and there were fewer questions for this group, although it was interesting to hear how Mark Hofeling put together an amazing set that was both utilitarian and safe for the dancers. Surprisingly, HSM 4 is coming our way. Sigh. I expect it will be a new crop of faces as most of the core cast has gone on to bigger and better projects. Keep your eye on Chucky Klapow, everyone. He is a rising superstar who is assisting Kenny Ortega with Michael Jackson's big comeback tour in London. If Jackson delivers, I think we should all expect a US comeback for the King of Pop. While we may be exhausted from his tabloid antics over the past decade, remember many of you ran home to see "Thriller" on MTV each afternoon. The King of Pop sure knows how to dance.

The one final tidbit I want to leave with you......SYTYCD fans, the Katie Holmes rumor is true. She will be performing a number from "Summer Stock" that was choreographed by Tyce Diorio. Don't let the tabloids fool you into thinking Nigel Lythgoe had anything to do with it. Let's give credit where credit is due.....go, Tyce!

Thanks for joining me for this special edition of Red Carpet Closet. Who cares what I wore? It was all about dance!

Reporting Live from Los Angeles,
Kristyn

Dance Channel TV and Woody Allen's Whatever Works

Good Afternoon!
This is a two for one special on this day. I had two shoots pretty close together in time, so one outfit would have to suffice. I knew that I could go for a more casual dress so, I chose my favorite Mossimo eggplant-colored dress and changed it up in a variety of ways for two different looks. The dress is a super-comfy cotton dress with pockets in front and a rounded neckline with capped sleeves. I started out by wearing the dress with the fabric sash it comes with and my favorite Target gold costume jewelry. Again, my shoes were my most expensive thing on my body...fantastic Carlos Santana black and eggplant strappy sandals with green and yellow beaded accents. I know this sounds like a rainbow puked all over my shoes, but I promise they are hot with 4" heels. And yes, Carlos makes some good music, and some darn good stilettos.

My first shoot of the day was the first edition of the "Can't Miss List" for Dance Channel TV. We will be shooting the gossip and dance news every two weeks and it is a fantastic project that I look forward to each and every time. You can check out the first episode here: Can't Miss List

I then had to dash from the Valley and over the hill to the Pacific Design Center for the premiere of Woody Allen's "Whatever Works" for Focus Hollywood. I was excited to cover this premiere because of the cast: Larry David, Ed Begley Jr., Evan Rachel Wood, and Patricia Clarkson. I knew I had to dress the outfit up a bit for the red carpet, so I grabbed my gold Express belt that I wore from the Heroes Among Us red carpet. I LOVE this belt, it's gold, sparkly, and stretchy. That's right, stretchy....you can make it an empire waist belt or wear it low slung over your hips. It is GENIUS and it is still on sale at Express. Check it out here: Express Gold Belt I kept my Carlos Santana shoes and removed the gold necklace so it wouldn't clutter the effect of the belt. Simple......two outfits in one! Oh, and check out the footage here: Whatever Works

Thanks for all of your feedback. I want to show that it is easy and affordable to dress for the red carpet or everyday life. Keep your comments coming and follow me on Kristyn Burtt!
