The Friday Five: June 22, 2012

We've made it to the weekend! After finishing up the Magic Mike (Hello, naked butts of Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum!) press junket, my relaxation time begins.  I'm heading to the opening night of the Hollywood Bowl this evening with Reba McEntire and Chaka Khan, so I am looking forward to the first official weekend of the summer.  I'm also starting a month-long detox and cleanse, so we will see how that goes. (I am doing this under medical supervision and I get to eat real food.  I am not interested in drinking maple syrup, lemon, and cayenne pepper for 30 days.)

Here's my Friday Five for June 22, 2012:

1.  AfterBuzz TV:  I am having so much fun co-hosting this show with AJ Gibson and Corrinne Williams.  I love chatting about So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) and the personal stories of the dancers.  This week we had a special guest, Leif Gantvoort, of The Amazing Spider-Man join us in studio to chat about the show because he is a super fan.  He knew each season better than we did.  In the coming weeks, we have former contestants giving us the inside scoop on what it is like to make it to the Top 20.  So be sure to join me LIVE at 10PM PT/1AM ET each Wednesday at AfterBuzz TV.  Here is this week's episode if you missed it. (I know there is no image, but I promise you that the video is there once you hit "play".)

2.  Fanboy Comics:  They kindly syndicated my article on "Three Reasons To See Disney•Pixar's Brave".  I warned you in the article and I am going to warn you again.....this movie is scary.  Please think twice about taking a child under the age of four.  My mommy friend took her three-year old today and her little girl was only happy when the movie was over.  As for everyone else, go see the movie and check out my article here and a great Vulture article that Josh Sussman passed along to me that ranks their favorite Pixar films.

3.  Swirly Garden:  I was given this hand-painted glass as a part of The Artisan Group gift bag at the GBK Gifting Suites during Oscar season.  I love how vibrant the flowers are on the glass and I am going to scoop up more for gifts during the holiday season. Check out Meena Kumar's work on her website where you can find exquisite hand-painted wine glasses, coffee mugs, and vases.  Tell her KB sent you!

4.  Ann Curry:  I imagine this was a really hard week to be Ann and go on national TV each morning while everyone speculates about your firing and possible replacement.  Even though the news was made public this week, the gossip has been going around for nearly six months in the entertainment industry.  It reminds me of this insightful article Deborah Norville wrote for The Hollywood Reporter about women needing to support, not bash, each other in the industry.  For even more perspective, read today's New York Times article on the whole debacle.

5.  Rumor Fix:  I love debunking Hollywood myths and I discovered a site that does just that with reality shows.  For my Housewives fans, watch Alex McCord give inside scoop on how they film the Housewives series.  Yes, the emotions are real, but the situations often are not.  Remember, reality is not always reality.

I will see you on Monday, but be sure to follow my weekend adventures:
Instagram:  @KristynBurtt for all of my Hollywood Bowl photos tonight.
Twitter:  for all of my weekend chatter.
Facebook:  to see the "HUGE" check I received this week and why it was sent to me.

The Swirly Garden glass was gifted to me.  I was not asked to post about it, I just thought it was a cool gift idea.  All opinions are my own.

  1. I am sorry to say this but I am not a fan of Ann Curry at all. She comes across as phony and I just can't help but get annoyed with the way she interviews people. I haven't watched today in a long time, but I do know I stopped watching because of her.If the fairing is in fact true then I wish her well in her future endeavors because there is really no need for me to wish her ill just because I don't like the way she presents her work.

  2. With that being said I don't think it is fair to single her out for the ratings. Many factors play into these things yet she was the only best target? Why couldn't Matt Lauer be blamed as her co-host? I may not be her fan but I do find that totally unfair. Ann should do Dateline more often because I find her more tolerable there.

  3. Lisa, I agree with you. I am a huge Meredith Vieira fan and Ann was much better behind the news desk. Anchoring The Today Show was not a great move for her. I am sure there are many factors in why the ratings dipped and many oppose Savannah Guthrie as her replacement. The new rumor is Hoda Kotb is being asked to step into the role.......but then where does that leave Kathie Lee? It's going to be an interesting shift as they try and figure out what to do in a short amount of time. They are working against the Olympics deadline.
