3 Takeaways From The SAG Awards

It's hard to believe that we are rounding the corner to the final award show of the season.  With Golden Globes, DGA Awards, and now SAG Awards officially done, where do we stand?  Well, here are three takeaways to ponder until the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26th:

1.  Here are your official Oscar winners in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories:  Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer.  No one can beat them.  It's done and the final Oscar ballots aren't even in.

2.  Viola Davis:  She proved herself to be a contender tonight, but remember Meryl Streep is a formidable opponent who walked away with the Golden Globe in the same category this year.  Many voters feel that Streep is way overdue for another Oscar given the fact that she last won in 1983 for Sophie's Choice and she has a record 17 nominations under her belt.  This is a two-woman race for Best Actress at this point.

3.  Jean Dujardin:  Interesting and unexpected win for him tonight.  A two-man race that was being lead by George Clooney and Brad Pitt suddenly became a three-man race for that golden statuette.  A good thing to remember is that the Acting Branch at the Academy has the largest membership of any branch.  This could sway a race that some thought Clooney had locked up earlier in the awards season.

If you are wondering if The Help now stands a chance to win Best Picture after their ensemble award win at the SAG Awards, think again.  The Academy doesn't offer an ensemble category, so the Best Picture race is still The Artist's to lose.

What are your thoughts on last night's show?  Comment below and let me know what you think of my awards season assessment.

  1. I think it is between Viola and Michelle Williams...Meryl is amazing and brilliant and does the work everyone expects her to.  I think the next time she wins, it will be for something completely different.  She has to shock the Academy and wake them up.  And on a second screening of Moneyball...Pitt is hands down better than Clooney.   But who knows Gary Oldman may sneak in there.

    1. I agree with you on Brad. This was his best performance onscreen to date and one of George's weaker performances, in my opinion. I wish Brad was the front runner.

I think you are wrong about Michelle. She hasn't win a major award to date. She's in 3rd place behind Streep and Davis who have flip-flopped between 1st and 2nd place all season. Want to take bets on Best Actress?

  2. Agree with everything - strong insight.  However, "The Help" is now officially a Best Picture contender.  True, there's no "Best Ensemble" category at the Oscars, but SAG's body usually treats their "Ensemble" category as their "Best Picture," so it could very well mean "The Help" could win Best Picture because of the win tonight and the amount of SAG members in the Academy (see "Crash"'s upset win over "Brokeback Mountain" after grabbing "Best Ensemble").  Always great stuff Kristyn!

  4. If The Help wins Best Picture, I will be floored.  The SAG was an acting award for the ensemble (and well-deserved.....I voted for them.) and the SAG ensemble award rarely predicts the Best Picture winner. There are definitely better films out there this year than The Help.  As we know though, the best movie does not always win.  e.g. Crash winning over Brokeback.  Thanks for stopping by, Joel!  I appreciate your insight.

  5. I think Pitt is the best of the lot for Best Actors.  He's not going to win.  :(  I think Viola has the heat around her at the right time......right when the ballots are out to Academy members.  I am throwing my weight behind Streep, but Viola may easily come out on top.

  6. Wow, you have a very cool perspective and a great blog.  I loved The Help so much, it is hard not to want Viola Davis to win.
